Try leather on the gunmetal F-91W

I fitted black Vario leather straps with quick-release spring bars to a gunmetal grey F-91W.

External strap swap. Original push-pin removal is the fiddly part.

Before you buy

My verdict

An alternative to adapters if you like a simple two-piece strap.

It may not suit you if: You prefer the feel of resin or want to avoid removing the original push pins.

I fitted these straps to my gunmetal F-91W and checked the initial fit. Vario supplied the straps. I haven’t documented long-term wear.

How the build went

Use these notes with the video. Repeated chapter links start at the relevant section, not at each individual action.

  1. Remove the factory push pins

I used a hammer, pin tool and support platform to remove the original strap. Watch the pin direction and support in the video before starting. Quick-release replacement bars do not make removal of the original pins easier.

  2. Fit the leather strap

The black Vario straps shown had quick-release spring bars. I fitted these without hammering the original push pins back in. Check the spring-bar tips seat fully in the watch lugs.

  3. Check the wrist fit

I found the leather soft and supple immediately on my 6.5 in (16.5 cm) wrist. That is an initial impression, not a wear-in or longevity test. Check your own strap length and buckle position.

Where it can get awkward

A generic 18mm strap does not sit properly

Width alone is not enough. Vario sells a fitted F-91W collection. The successful build applies to the fitted straps shown, not every 18mm quick-release strap.

The spring bar will not seat

Stop and check alignment and the seller’s model fit. Do not force the strap against the case or assume another spring bar solves an incompatible strap shape.

Tools to check first

A suitable pin punch, small hammer and support platform were used for the factory strap. The supplied quick-release bars handle installation of the replacement. Use suitable tools you already have.

Before wearing it

  • Check each spring-bar tip is seated before wearing the watch.
  • Check the buckle closes securely and the keepers hold the loose end.
  • Keep leather away from situations where you would prefer a water-friendly strap. Follow the strap maker’s care guidance.

Evidence & current fit notes

Hands-on source: Original GOAT Reviews build ↗. Watch my original build and use the chapter links above to see how each step went.

Current seller status: Vario’s current Coal Black fitted strap lists 18mm lugs, a 22mm strap tapering to an 18mm buckle, approximate 125mm and 75mm strap portions, and quick-release pins. These are current maker specifications, not a new hands-on measurement. Check your selected buckle and wrist fit. The affiliate route covers Vario more broadly.

External references were checked on 12 October 2026. I’ve labelled the maker’s current guidance separately from what I tried myself. I haven’t pressure-tested these modified watches.
