What went wrong with my Royale metal cases

I replaced an earlier Royale metal case after its lens fogged in the shower, then installed another budget metal case.

Case and module transfer. Current replacement-case sourcing remains unresolved.

My verdict

I’d hold off buying a case through this guide. My first case leaked, and I can’t reliably identify the replacement in the current seller route. Here’s what I learned from both.

It may not suit you if: You need assured water resistance or cannot identify which case variant the seller will supply.

I tried two budget cases. The replacement stayed clear after one shower, but that isn’t a pressure test. I haven’t inspected the seller’s current stock.

Another case route to research

SKXMOD’s Gen.2 matte kit explicitly lists AE-1200 module compatibility. The maker lists a 316L steel case, pre-installed sapphire glass, a metal caseback and supplied screws. It also warns that the metal enclosure reduces the beeping volume, and that gallery modules and faceplates are not included.

This is a different kit from the budget cases in my video. I haven’t tried this kit or tested its fit, durability or water resistance. Confirm the chosen kit contents, installation instructions, final price and shipping with the maker.

How the build went

Use these notes with the video. Repeated chapter links start at the relevant section, not at each individual action.

  1. Identify why the old case failed

My earlier case had gaps around the lens and fogged after a shower. The replacement had a different lens surround and brushed finish. Similar listing photos do not prove which case a seller will send.

  2. Lay out every supplied part

I found the supplied screws, gasket and drivers after the first assembly. The original Casio screws were too large, and shorter screws from the old metal case were too short. I reopened the watch, removed dust and fitted the supplied screws.

  3. Confirm module and screw fit

Use the original AE-1200 module and the case maker’s instructions. A Sanda 6133 module did not fit the original Casio case because its lips were too wide. This guide does not recommend filing or forcing it.

  4. Treat sealing as unverified

The replacement showed no moisture after one shower in the video. That observation is not a pressure test or proof of reliable water resistance. Arrange professional testing if the rating matters to you.

Where it can get awkward

The seller cannot identify the case version

Do not buy based on this guide. Ask for the exact variant, module fit, supplied screw specification, gasket and lens-seal details. The original shopping route cannot distinguish the two historical samples.

The screws do not fit

Do not substitute the original screws or force a driver. my two attempted screw sets were unsuitable. Check the supplied kit and the case maker’s instructions first.

There is fogging behind the lens

The earlier sample fogged after water exposure. Stop relying on its seals and have the watch inspected. A dry-looking case later does not establish that the seal is sound.

Tools to check first

The video shows screwdrivers, tweezers, a repair pad and a blower. The included screws and gasket matter more than buying a particular driver. No case-buy button is provided while the variant is unresolved.

Before wearing it

  • Check the supplied gasket, screws and module fit against the case maker’s instructions.
  • Check display, buttons and dust before finishing the assembly.
  • Avoid relying on water resistance until the assembled watch has been professionally tested.

Current seller status: I haven’t identified a current listing for the exact replacement case. The tool links below don’t establish case fit or availability.

External references were checked on 12 October 2026. I’ve labelled the maker’s current guidance separately from what I tried myself. I haven’t pressure-tested these modified watches.
